At the Sunderland Music Festival

Posted by Brian on 25th February 2012 in Fingerstyle Guitar, Journal, Performing

Last Tuesday, I had the privilege of playing at the Sunderland Lions’ Music Festival along with four of my guitar students. The tune that I chose to play this year was “Dune” by Bob Evans.

Last spring, on May 1st, I got to see Bob Evans play a concert at The Earl Pub in Stouffville. At the concert, he mentioned that there was a transcription of his song “Dune” available for free on his website. On May 2nd, I started to work on the tune. It took me three months to learn the tune, and another three months before I was able to try it out at an open mic. At long last, in approximately the same amount of time that it takes to make a baby, it was ready to be presented “for real” at the festival.

Below, is the video of me playing “Dune” in Sunderland. And while it is not my best performance of the tune, I’m pretty pleased with the results. At one point, I squeezed the neck too hard and produced an awful noise that was supposed to be a chord, and later on I had a minor brain cramp where I momentarily forgot where I was going, but overall, I was happy with the result. (And the adjudicator had nice things to say too!)

So, (with apologies for the quality of the audio and video) here I am playing “Dune” at the 2012 Sunderland Music Festival:

Dune

Back in March, I posted a feature on Bob Evans and I mentioned that I would be seeing him play live on May 1st. I did, indeed, see him play, and it was a great show. One of the tunes that he played was “Dune”, probably his most famous tune (if a fingerstyle guitarist can have a “famous” tune – maybe “famous-among-guitar-geeks” would be more accurate). He also mentioned that a free transcription was available on his website… So, on May 2nd, I started working on the tune. Now, here it is in late July and I almost have the tune down, except for one bar at the top of page 5, and I’m pretty sure that a few more hours spent with my trusty metronome will have it beaten into submission.

Canadian Guitarists You Should Know About: Bob Evans

Posted by Brian on 10th March 2011 in Canadian Guitarists, Fingerstyle Guitar, Guitarists

“Bob Evans is not a well known restaurant chain. Well, ok, technically it is. But THIS Bob Evans is the award winning, Canadian finger-style guitarist.”

intro on Bob Evans’ website

In fact, this Bob Evans has a whole page on his website dedicated to over forty of the Bob Evanses that he is not. This Bob Evans is the only Canadian Guitarist not named Don Ross to ever win the U.S. National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship (2003) and two of his albums have won “Outstanding Instrumental Album” at the Western Canadian Music Awards and a third was nominated. And despite his instrumental prowess, this Bob Evans is not afraid to open his mouth and sing.

This Bob Evans – and this is one of the things I like most – provides free transcriptions to a number of his tunes and arrangements on his website. And, I’ve got tickets to see this Bob Evans when he plays at the Earl of Whitchurch Pub in Stouffville on May 1. (You can get your tickets through FingerstyleGuitar.ca – Note: I have no commercial interest in this, or any other, Bob Evans.)
